PARENTS PROVIDING EVERY OPPORTUNITY FOR THEIR CHILDREN TO WIN

PARENTS PROVIDING EVERY OPPORTUNITY FOR THEIR CHILDREN TO WIN

GREAT COACHES
Most people who understand competitive sports understand the importance of the coach. Obviously there needs to be great players, and sometimes there is a single player on a championship team who tips the scale toward victory. But this article is about coaching, so I am focusing on coaches. Great coaching is what got both Wisconsin and Duke to the championship game last night, and great coaching is what brought the trophy back to Durham. Coach K is a phenomenon. No, he is not the only spectacular coach, but he is the one who led his team to victory last night.

This theme can be developed much more fully than I will touch on in these few paragraphs. But here is my main point: Coaches are vital to a winning program, from beginning to end. They find, they choose, they draft, they train, they play, they teach, they rule, they love, they comfort, they position, they bench, they correct, they support and encourage their players. They know the fundamentals of their game, and they know the technical secrets and tricks to success. They know their players and they know the factors that motivate, inform, and focus their players. They teach their players about life, not just about their favorite sport.

SPIRITUAL COACHING
Obviously this article is not concerned with sports or athletic events. It is concerned with Christians reaching their full potential. This is where coaches come into the picture. Go back to the previous paragraph and reread the description of a coach, but replace, "coach" with, "pastor." When a player quits listening to his coach, he robs himself and his team. When a believer stops learning from his pastor, when he stops listening to his pastor, when he stops asking his pastor to coach him, he robs himself and his family, his church and his community of the best Christian he can be.

HUNGRY PLAYERS
It is not enough for believers to follow pastoral leading, and take pastoral counsel; strong, successful believers ask pastors for evaluation, and spiritual coaching. They ask for criticism, correction, then they accept the pastor's input, they address it, and they act on it.

DEVELOPING A DYNASTY
Not only should Christians receive and follow the pastor's coaching, Christians should be asking for pastoral input concerning their children. Sports minded people get their children involved in good athletic programs early, with good coaches. They tell their children to listen to their coach. Most young people that succeed in sports have been at it since their early years. Parents should be providing their children with the best Christian training possible, at home and also with a winning pastor and church.

EARLY START
People will sit down with experts and plan their children's education, their athletic pathway, their economic future, their career or vocational options. How much more important that the same steps be taken in the spiritual realm. Don't wait. Don't neglect giving them specialized training and setting the best model for them to follow. Ask the pastor to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your children and to share them with you, the parents, and with the children themselves. Ask the pastor what your children need to do, what they need to change in order to be the best they can be.
