WEDNESDAY NIGHT STUDY (Life of Joseph)
(We were very happy to have Kenneth and Peggy Cantrell with us. The Cantrell's are the parents of Hillary).
The Life Of Joseph was our lesson in Bible study last night. I am using Wednesday night services to study the Bible narrative through the lives of its characters. It is not just a study of the events, relationships, exploits and historical significance of the people; I also address the character qualities and the importance of the people as they relate to the soteriological (salvation) and eschatological (end times) plan of God.
I make the lessons so that they are understandable to the children. One of the good things with our children is that they are familiar with Biblical history because they get good home training and they also have very good Sunday School classes. Sometimes I tell things that I know the children already know, as well as the adults, but I try to share ideas, facts that might be new or insightful. Familiar passages still need to be studied: review is always important, along maintaining the chronological order of the narrative.
I focused on the moral character of Joseph during difficult times, in contrast to the failures of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, the Egyptian midwives and Rahab when each of them lied. I addressed the importance of honesty and the coming judgment of God on all liars (Re. 21:8).
At the end of the study the children had a great number of questions (thoughtful questions), including questions about the resurrection, the Beast, the chaining of Satan, the thousand year reign of Christ, the final battle with Satan, the final judgment. In fact, they had so many good questions that I had a hard time ending the session.
