They don't want to know because it conflicts with their worldview or because it is uncomfortable. They not only ignore the reports, they ridicule the reports and those who are concerned.

* SOMETIMES PEOPLE JUST MISS IT.
They are not looking for the information or they are not interested, they may just read right over it or fail to hear it, or dismiss it, or they consult limited resources.

* SOMETIMES IT IS HARD TO FIND.
Although it might be of great importance, the news media may want to diminish its value by giving it scant coverage. People are also more interested in the things that make them happy than the things that make the safer or better.

* SOMETIMES IT IS NOT REPORTED.
When the news media is more of a propaganda machine, they may ignore vital events, or refuse to cover them.

QUESTION ANSWERED
As a young person, I wondered how the people of Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States could have allowed the monster, Hitler, to rise to power and commit such atrocities. NOW I KNOW, because I am watching a society ignore and refuse the facts all around them.
